Step 4 of 5: Optimizing Facility Performance

Facility managers, CEOs, and CFOs all face headwinds in managing their facility investments. Whether it be because of technological complexity or just a lack of time and funding, building owners struggle to operate their facilities at optimal levels. This means they are losing money they could be saving and energy they could be conserving. Below is Step Four of a five-step series on optimizing your facility performance and maximizing your return on investment. These optimization metrics include:

  • Energy Savings
  • Utility Incentives
  • Operation and Maintenance Savings
  • Increased Occupant Comfort, Health, and Productivity
  • Reduced Carbon Emissions

Step 4: Sustaining Optimization – Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx)
Why work to sustain a facility’s optimization? Because a facility left alone will degrade over time and cost you money, while sustaining a facility’s optimization yields the maximum return-on-investment.

  • Apply analytics software —ideally already in place from commissioning (Cx) or retro-commissioning (RCx)— to automate and enhance the process.
  • Seek independent advice to select the software package that best fits your needs. Considerations include: packaged vs. customizable, ability to scale, independence from controls system(s), independence from engineering, etc.

What is Monitoring-based Commissioning?
A process to maintain and continuously improve building performance by collecting, analyzing and taking corrective action on large amounts of data on a continuous basis.
